Modifier Templates

Overview

A Modifier Template is one modifier group — Milk, Sugar level, Toppings — that you define once and use on as many products as you like. Change an option or a price in the template and every product that uses it changes with it, so you no longer edit the same group product by product.

Find it in the sidebar under Product → Modifier Templates (/modifier-templates). The list shows each template with its type, its options, how many products use it, and when it was last changed.

For what a modifier group and its options are, see Modifiers.

How it works

  • A template holds one group: its name, whether it is single or multiple choice, and its options with their prices.
  • You choose which products use it. Each of those products gets the group, and it sells on the POS, the kiosk and online ordering like any other modifier group.
  • Saving the template updates every product that uses it.
  • On the product itself the group can't be edited. The one thing each product keeps for itself is whether an option is on or off there.
Set in the template — the same on every productKept by each product
Group name, type, Mandatory, Selection min / maxWhether each option is active on that product
Each option's name, short name, image, add-on prices, channels, dining modes, quantities and nutritionWhere the group sits among the product's other groups
Each option's Master modifier linkRecipe tracking on an option (Track Ingredients, Ingredient Bundles)

One template, one price

An option costs the same on every product that uses the template. If some products need a different price, or a different set of options, make a second template for them.

Default setup

Bean & Brew example: a Milk group used on every coffee.

1. Create the template

  1. Open Product → Modifier Templates and click Create.
  2. Fill in the group. To start from a group one of your products already has, click Copy from a product, pick the product and the group, then Use this group — the product itself is not changed.
  3. Save. You are taken straight to Choose products.
FieldWhat it does
Group nameWhat customers see above the options.
Template nameOptional. Only shown in the admin, to tell templates apart — for example Milk — hot drinks and Milk — iced drinks.
TypeSingle choice or Multiple choice.
MandatoryThe customer must choose before adding the product to the cart.
Selection min / maxFor multiple choice: the fewest and most options a customer may pick.

The options are edited in the same grid as on a product — see Modifiers for what each column does. In a multiple-choice group, every option needs a Max quantity.

2. Choose its products

  1. On Choose products, find the products: search by name or code, or filter by Categories or Tags.
  2. Tick the ones that should use the template. The Now column shows where each product stands today, and After saving shows what will happen to it.
  3. Click Save … changes, read the summary, and confirm with Save changes.
NowWhat it means
—The product has no group with this name. Ticking it adds the group.
Own group, sameThe product has its own group with the same name and the same content. Ticking it links that group to the template; nothing a customer sees changes.
Own group, differentSame name, different content — the line underneath says what differs (prices, options, master modifier links). Ticking it replaces the product's group with the template's.
From another templateThe group comes from a different template. Ticking it moves the product to this one.
Uses this templateAlready linked. Unticking it removes the group from the product.
Cannot use templatesA product synced from another system (Eats365, Shopify, Vend).

Choose products lists your single products, up to 2,000 of them. Combo and variant products are not listed.

A group with the same name is replaced

If a product already has a group with the template's Group name, the template takes that group over instead of adding a second one. Options with the same name keep their sales history; options the template doesn't have are removed from that product. Check the Now column before you save.

Changing a template

Open the template, make the change and Save. The message says how many products were updated — Template saved. 12 products updated. Tills, kiosks and online ordering pick the change up the same way they do when you save a product.

  • Change a name or a price — every product follows.
  • Add an option — it appears on every product.
  • Remove an option — it is removed from every product that uses the template.
  • Active — each product has its own switch for each option. Flipping Active in the template flips it on every product; leaving it alone leaves each product's own setting as it is.

On the product form

A group that comes from a template is marked Modifier template, with the template's name beside it. Its options and prices are shown, but they are changed in the template, not here:

  • Active on this product — switch an option off for this product only, for example a topping one drink doesn't take.
  • Edit template — opens the template.
  • Detach — turns the group back into the product's own group, with the same options. From then on it no longer follows the template. Save the product to confirm.
  • The delete icon removes the group from this product only.

To put a template on the product you are editing, click Add from Template in the Modifier section, choose the template, and save the product.

On the POS

A template group sells like any other group. In the POS product Settings → Edit modifiers, staff can still switch an option's Active on or off for that product. Any other change to the group is refused there:

"Milk" comes from a modifier template. Only its options can be switched on or off here; change the rest in the admin dashboard.

Taking a template off, and deleting it

You want to…Do thisResult
Take the group off some productsChoose products → untick them → saveThe group is removed from those products.
Keep the group on a product, but stop it following the templateProduct form → Detach → save the productThe product keeps the group as its own.
Delete the templateOpen it → Delete templateEvery product that used it keeps the group as its own. Nothing is removed from your menu.

Good to know

  • Stock. Set each option's Master modifier in the template; it then applies on every product. The bulk assign products screen under Master Modifier Values skips template groups for the same reason. See Modifier Inventory.
  • Recipes. Recipe tracking on an option (Track Ingredients, Ingredient Bundles) is not part of a template. A product keeps whatever its options had when the template was applied.
  • Cloning a product. The copy uses the same template as the original.
  • Importing products. A product CSV import leaves a template group as the template defines it; the rest of the row is imported as usual. See Bulk & Smart Import.
  • Who can do what. A merchantAdmin can create, change and delete templates and choose their products. outletAdmin and outletRegisterAdmin can view them. See Roles & Permissions.
